the rebel gender project
‘They look dodgy’, ‘why the fuck is he wearing a dress?’, ‘faggot’, ‘tranny’, ‘sissy’, – ugly words from small minds. With no visual cues other than someone’s dress or small gestures, I watched friends and family turn into ugly monsters: ignorant, misguided, moralising and fearful.
According to Suicide Prevention Australia (2014), ‘research continues to demonstrate that the prevalence and rates of self-harm and attempted suicide are significantly higher amongst GLBTI (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex), people’.
In 2014, driven by this intolerance where misguided actions and words marginalize others, causing distrust and prejudices within our own communities, I began a series of portraits of transgender people in our community. Inspired by Roz’s own words – it is called the Rebel Gender Project.
