I became interested in tattoos because I could not get one myself. When my husband offered to get one for me, I wondered how people decided the tattoo design – it seemed such a momentous decision for a permanent visual representation on one’s skin.
People were very generous when I asked if I could photograph them. The tattooist and the person, be they young, old, single, married or even widowed, bond very closely in the time it takes to complete an ‘ink’. Personal stories are shared and boundaries fall. Their bodies echo the pain they feel with every touch of the tattooist’s needle. Intimacy and vulnerability are revealed along with the amount of trust put into the tattooist as an artist.
